Rimbun Dahan Residency - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2016)
Choreographic Residency
Supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation and Creative New Zealand, through the Tup Lang Choreographic Award, Borderline choreographer Lucy Marinkovich undertook two arts residencies in South East Asia over three months in 2016. From early April to early June, Lucy attended a two month choreographic residency at Rimbun Dahan, an arts facility located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The site is the home of arts patrons Hijjas Katuri, an eminent Malaysian architect, and his wife Angela Kasturi.
Lucy engaged in various dance and art projects during this two month period such as choreographing two new contemporary works on local Malaysian dancers for the Penang Dance Day Festival, teaching dance workshops within the festival, hosting daily technique class for emerging choreographers within the ASEAN region during the South East Asian Choreolab, for which she was also a participant.
Special thanks to Bilqis Hijjas for facilitating Lucy's residency, Syar S Alia, The Japan Foundation, Monica Turner, Aida Redza, Hock Keng, and Joie Koo.

The Cabinet - Penang, Malaysia (2016)
Penang Dance Day Festival - Impulse to Dance performance
The Cabinet is a duet created for Malaysian dancers Amellia Feroz and Mamad Hj Samsudin. The Cabinet was inspired by the element of curiosity that is a fundamental human characteristic. The work playful replicates imagery of Victorian curiosity cabinets, circus performer personalities, and vaudeville characters. The quirky and expressive physical vocabulary is accentuated by the suave soundscore composed by Lucien Johnson (NZ).
